Taichung Station 台中車站

My images of Taichung's train station 台中火車站

I like Taichung's Railway Station (台中車站) a lot, because it has such a special feel to it. It was built in 1905. It's a mix of Japanese influences with Renaissance-styled red bricks (source). Although Taichung has about 1 million inhabitants, the rail station seems pretty small. It only has 3 platforms and you've seen the whole building and everything around it in about 5 minutes. Nevertheless, it's charming and lovely building. At least you can't get lost here. And it really has a special ambiance, it makes you feel as if you were in Taichung 100 years ago (you just have to look past the electronic signboards). This is probably one of the best pieces of early 20th century architecture in Taichung, if not Taiwan. The train station looks similar to the one in Hsinchu.

See some of my photos of Taichung's main railway station:

The outside part.

A detail on the small tower. I wonder where is the clock.

A big plaza in front of the station. Much more space here than in Hsinchu.

Inside the building, where tickets are sold.

The waiting area, a big hall. It looks nicer than the one in Hsinchu.

Right outside the station.

Golden Plaza: Currently (2010) the 6th tallest building in Taiwan, 178m at the top.

Train arriving at the platform 1.

Train leaving.

People patiently waiting for their train. Taiwanese are very well organized.
